The science of building muscle has changed a lot in the last 50 years; sports science has led the average bodybuilder to an ever increasing list of supplements available. But these days anyone that is trying to build muscle needs the basics which were not available 50 years ago.

As a beginner about to start pumping iron in order to gain muscle, you need a few basic supplements to help the process. If you have heard the expression "muscles are built in the kitchen" then you'll know that anything you swallow will have a direct impact on your ability to repair from an intense workout.

Typically, when most people start training for the very first time, their enthusiasm comes with impatience often leading to a huge and unnecessary expense on supplements. You definitely need supplements if you're training with weights on a regular basis, but you don't need everything.

Below are 5 basic supplements that you need if your objective is muscle gain on a sustainable basis. There are cheap and expensive alternatives to all of the supplements recommended below, routine builds muscle so take your time and see what supplements work best for you.

1. Whey Powder:

There are many protein sources available but without a doubt whey protein is the fastest to digest. Perfect for a post-workout protein mix to give your damaged muscle fibre the much needed high quality protein it needs. There are countless clinical studies available that have proven whey to be a very digestible protein source.

2. Creatine:

Without going into the different types of creatine, generally available on the market today creatine is split into two types: Kre-Alkalyn Creatine or Monohydrate Creatine. Creatine has conclusively proven itself to increase your rate of recovery and increase muscle hypertrophy.

3. Branched Chain Amino-Acids:

BCAA's or Branched Chain Amino-Acid supplements are required to maintain your existing muscle mass, if you're trying to lose fat. Although whey protein is actually high in all BCAAs, they are not in free form. If you use free form BCAAs you'll get better muscle retention and increased fat loss. 4. Greens

Believe it or not Greens is a supplement that helps to minimize all negative side effects when eating a diet with no or very little fruits and vegetables. Please note that it will minimize not REPLACE your fruits and vegetables you need to eat every day, Green supplements only minimizes the damage not eating veggies causes.

5. Fish Oils:

Fish oil is a super supplement because of its anti-inflammatory effect that'll also improve your cardiac function and prevent cancer. Make sure you purchase oil with greater than 50% total fish oil like EPA and DHA. Low quality fish oil has high mercury content, not good.
